When's the Best Time to Build Your Attached ADU?
Honestly, you can pretty much build year-round in Anaheim. We're pretty lucky that way, with our mild Mediterranean climate. We don't get those brutal winters like other parts of the country, and snow? Forget about it. That said, some seasons are definitely better for certain parts of the construction process than others.
- Spring (March-May): This is usually a fantastic window. Temperatures are super comfortable, hanging around the 60s and 70s, and we typically see less rain than in winter. It’s perfect for foundation work, framing, and getting the exterior all buttoned up without extreme heat or heavy downpours.
- Summer (June-August): It gets warm, sometimes hitting the high 80s or even 90s, especially in August. Humidity usually stays pretty moderate, though, so it’s rarely muggy. The biggest plus here is how dry it is; July and August are almost always our driest months. This is prime time for exterior finishes, roofing, and any work that absolutely needs consistently dry conditions. Just be prepared for those hotter days, which can slow down crews a bit — understandably.
- Fall (September-November): Another excellent stretch. Temperatures start cooling down into the 70s and low 80s, and it’s still relatively dry, especially in September and October. This period is ideal for all the interior work, painting, and getting the landscaping just right around your new ADU.
- Winter (December-February): Our winters are mild, with temperatures usually in the 60s and low 70s. But this is our rainy season. February often gets the most rain, averaging around 3 inches. While we can still work, heavy rain can definitely cause delays, especially for pouring foundations, exterior painting, or anything that needs to stay dry. Concrete, for instance, needs time to cure properly, and pouring it on frozen or really wet ground can lead to problems later on when the ground thaws and settles.
Weather Conditions That Affect Construction
Even though Anaheim's weather is generally pretty good, a few things can still throw a wrench in our plans:
- Rain: This is our biggest headache, especially from November to March. Rain can completely stop exterior work, delay concrete pours, and make job sites muddy and even unsafe. It can also, if not handled right, expose structural weaknesses. - Heat: Those summer highs can be tough on everyone. Crews need to take more breaks, stay hydrated, and sometimes work starts earlier to beat the worst of the heat. Materials like adhesives, paints, and sealants can also act differently in extreme heat, affecting how they go on and how long they take to dry.
- Wind: While it's usually pretty calm, we do get occasional Santa Ana winds. Strong winds can be a real safety hazard, especially when we're framing or putting on the roof, and they can kick up a ton of dust.
